Pastor at Riverside Church Ends Stormy Tenure With Unexpected Resignation
Church

From The New York Times:

In one version, the surprise resignation on Monday of the senior pastor at Riverside Church in Manhattan, less than a year after his appointment, stemmed from the loftiest of theological disputes.

In another, it was the result of a vitriolic campaign of personal attack that began the moment in September when church leaders announced their choice of that pastor, the Rev. Dr. Brad R. Braxton.

But by almost all accounts, Dr. Braxton’s decision to give up the pulpit at Riverside reflected a crisis of identity rending not only one congregation and its 2,000 members but the soul of Protestant liberalism in the United States.

Questions for one aspect of the story:

* Should there be an upper limit on pastor compensation?

* If yes, what should that limit be?

* Why?

Well, although specific numbers seem a bit tough, the philosophy of 'compensation' really ought not be one of payment, but one of support. A congregation/parish supports their pastor so that he can focus his time on pastorin'. They do not pay him to pastor. They are not buying his services from him but providing for one of their own who by the virtue of his role in the community isn't well suited to provide for himself. Otherwise things run afoul of church traditions way back and a pastor becomes a christmonger.
