What Else We Confess

What Else We Confess

So the Belhar Confession passed the General Synod and is on its way to the Classes. It will have a harder time getting approved in 31 Classes than getting a majority at Synod, but I think it probably will make it. If that is the case, though I have my reservations with the Belhar, I will be thankful for the themes of unity, justice, and reconciliation and pray that they are understood and applied correctly.

I also hope that our confession of the Belhar will precipitate a more robust confession of our current Standards.

I had never heard of the document before so I had to Google it and found it on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belhar_Confession.

When I read it I found most of it to be in line with what I believe. I found some of the early teen numbers to be what I say would be a perfect state of Christianity, not really obtainable till Jesus returns. Others may call it socialism.

When I got to the late teens and early 20's especially number 24:

Quote:
24. That the effectiveness of the Good News [7] was diluted by the actions of the South African government which claimed to be inherently Christian and yet promoted estrangement, hatred and enmity through enforced racial segregation.

I kind of came to the same conclusion that according to the article the NGK came to, that this document is Liberation Theology. While the statement may be true should it be in a confession of faith?

What I found interesting in the Wikipedia article was that one statement said that unity can not be forced but in their commentary they said:

Quote:
However, the URCSA's position was that all members of the NGK should be required to swear that the Belhar Confession is true, or face expulsion from the denomination.

What are your reservations about it holmegm?

I think mine are similar to DeYoung's. Do the existing confessions get the same fervor - or even the same allegiance? Is this a political document - however good and right for the time it was produced - dressed up as a confession?

And a few of my own - is reconciliation a two-way street? And is more publicly enlisting (outside of SA, pretty much redundantly) on the right side of a battle long over really such a bold big deal, or is it a prideful waste of time?
