New children's book takes on mommy's plastic surgery
Journal

Illustrations show a crook-nosed mom with loose tummy skin under her half shirt picking up her young daughter early from school one day and taking her to a strapping and handsome "Dr. Michael."

Mom explains she's going to have operations on her nose and tummy and may have to take it easy for a week or so. The girl asks if the operations will hurt, and mom replies, "Maybe a little," warning she'll look different after the bandages come off.

The girl asks: "Why are you going to look different?"

Mom responds: "Not just different, my dear — prettier!"

hey, it comes out april 28th! that's me birthday!! i don't like the idea of idealizing beauty as something you get with a nip and a tuck.. heehee.. especially not for children. it's bad enough barbie made us think that you had to be blonde haired, blue eyes, and thin as a stick to get ken... now we have to be that and have the perfect nose job? egh...
OrionBlastar  - The new trend is Bratz   |2008-04-21 16:15:42
which are, worse than Barbie in my opinion. But they currently outsell Barbie according to the news, Mattel is losing a lot of sales to the Bratz.

Yep. We've warned our friends and relatives regarding gifts for our girls: Bratz dolls go directly to the dumpster. They will not be donated to destroy other kids' virtues and since Toys'R'Us won't do exchanges without a receipt, we can't trade them for something edifying.

I find it crazy how parents are sexualizing and bratizing their own children. I've seen t-shirts for 5-year-old girls with sexual or violent messages. (Thankfully, I've yet to see one with both.)

Wow, 1 month to the day before my birthday.
patronpeter  - yup, i'll be 21   |2008-04-21 18:46:14
may 21st? that's four days before my sisters.. how old will you be, 24?
emperorbma   |2008-04-21 18:52:22
No, I meant your birthday is 1 month to the day before mine. Mine is May 28.

24 is correct.

what does this book have to do with theology or religion?

Did you review the wrong book, was "Sally has two mommies" supposed to be the right book that was reviewed that supports a lesbian couple being read in Christian schools?
emperorbma   |2008-04-19 00:15:48
Plastic surgery is a sign of the materialism and self-focus of modern culture, maybe?

Bingo.

Or at any rate, that these are factors Christians should at least consider on this subject.

See my response to emperorbma.

Not directly related, which is why I made it a Journal.

i agree that it's related in some way. maybe we need a Post-Christian Culture category or some such. or is this simply Crack material?
OrionBlastar  - How about a category?   |2008-04-20 10:48:50
Add it to the wish-list.

This could be a culture or book category.

We could also go Web 2.0 and use tags, but that would be more work.
grizzly  - re: tags   |2008-04-20 22:06:30
it would be more work to use tags, as the tag module is somewhat broken and I can't get it to work. :(

Ah well, leave it alone for now. You can figure it out later.

I'm busy trying to start up a new small business with my brother to do healthy food and beverage vending. I have a background with computers and might have been able to help if I wasn't already busy. Just that the computer business has gotten worse since 1998 due to Clinton's Dotcom bust and offshoring computer jobs overseas due to foreign trade agreements with India, China, Russia, etc.

I might start up a computer business later if the economy gets better. I hold degrees in computer and business.

I'm trying to start a company that helps people, eating and drinking healthier food and beverages may save lives. Too much junk food and sugary drinks out there as it is today.

I was going to create a computer company and do a web site with blogs and articles to help out people, but my brother had other plans.

In general, this appals me. It feeds into the materialistic society in which we live where "appearance is everything."

But, however, it is targeted at people that are having plastic surgery. It is being used as a tool to address a reality. It's not like it's going to be sold at your local Barnes and Noble. It is to be used as a tool to help kids understand what they can expect when mommy goes in for plastic surgery. As distasteful as I find it, the reality is that women are having plastic surgery and kids can be frightened at the thought of mommy having surgery.

I also found it interesting that there is a "handsome Dr. Michael," and the plastic surgeon that wrote the book is named Michael. Conceited? maybe ....

I suppose this book will sell a lot in California where almost every woman (and man) gets plastic surgery to look younger and make themselves look prettier/handsomer.

Though most women in California get silicone breast implants to look like Dolly Parton or whatever.
