News from South Carolina:

The sign in front of a small church in a small town is causing a big controversy in Jonesville, S.C.Pastor Roger Byrd said that he just wanted to get people thinking.

So last Thursday, he put a new message on the sign at the Jonesville Church of God.

It reads: "Obama, Osama, hmm, are they brothers?"

I'm done. I really am. This is a great example of what the culture does to people. It's a scorched play - win it all or burn it down. You don't even need to tell the truth, because the ideology is to "win at all costs."

Do these folks think they're not telling the truth? No, and that's even scarier to me.

Two thoughts. First, it's the exercise of "spiritual" authority through intentional stoking of fear-of-this-world. There is no place for this sort of mentality among Christians. An unusual and distinctive absence of fear-of-this-world has been a defining characteristic of the Christian witness from NT times.

Second, more than anything, I feel sorry for the people who are made afraid by this sort of power play. To get through, IMHO, people are going to have to go after and address the fear directly. It's not fundamentally an intellectual problem, it's an emotional and/or spiritual one.

let's see... the Republicans/Religious Right ran a campaign based on fear and ignorance and you're surprised that some folks bought in to it?

Surprised? No.
Disgusted? Yes.

“It’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustration.”
