Children of Polygamy: Life on the Outside
Journal

OK, I can see I'm going to have to Fisk this article.

(And needless to say, one needn't approve of this cult at all (I don't) to appreciate the ironies of the article.)

ABC News: Children of Polygamy: Life on the Outside

That means having grown up on a compound where the rules of childhood forbid the joys of normal child’s play like television and radio.

Television and radio are “the joys of normal child’s play”?!?

"And that women, particularly for members of this cult, matter and are not just baby machines."
Dang straight. They need to join modern society and realize that women are sex machines, not baby machines ...
"It can also be things like [fearing] they'll be raped by the outsiders, or that the outsiders will beat and torture you or that you'll get cancer or AIDS if you leave the compound," said Hassan.
Perhaps they could call a "campus rape hotline" and wake up one of the volunteers to talk about this irrationally disproportionate fear.

>>"They're going to need to realize that the world is a nice place and that they can sit in the sun and play on swings and that people will be kind to them and like them," said Hassan, who is a former member of Sun Myung Moon's cult. some of the world is a nice place... he obviously hasn't driven through Trenton lately...

Exactly. The whole tone of the article was grating, and loaded with unintended irony like that.

"We need to get them out into the 'real world' right away, where of course we would never let teenage girls have sex, unless, you know, they wanted to or something"

"Nor will we stand for men siring children with multiple partners, or committing adultery, no sir ... unless, um, you know, they want to or something."

And this is surprising? You're talking about the media here... ;-)

By the way... very nice site!

that's funny, this article was a good laugh, even if that wasn't the intention of the author. :-)

Nice to be here! I wanted to show some support for your new venture, and I always like talking with you! We should think about doing another Genesis project sometime. No now, though... my computer is tired and needs to take a nap!

A Colorado woman with a history of making phony reports to police has been named by Texas Rangers as a "person of interest" who could have made the calls to a women's shelter that sparked the FLDS compound raid.

Police arrested Rozita Estraletta Swinton, 33, at her Colorado Springs apartment Wednesday in connection with a February call to police there in which she pretended to be a young girl being held in a basement, said Colorado Springs police Lt. Skip Arms.

A court document says a phone number used to report alleged abuse at a polygamist retreat in Texas had been used previously by a 33-year-old Colorado woman.

It's not yet clear whether authorities suspect Rozita Swinton of Colorado Springs made any of the calls that triggered this month's raid of the compound.

An arrest warrant affidavit made public today says a phone number she had used previously was used to call a Texas crisis center before authorities conducted the raid and removed more than 400 children. Swinton's whereabouts are unknown.

Texas officials will present a series of steps that Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints parents will have to follow in order for their children to be returned, including proving they can provide a home free from potential child abusers and demonstrating the ability to protect children from abuse.

I see. So all you have to do is prove your innocence to the state. Some vague memory related to this sort of thing is bothering me, but I'm sure it must be OK.

How about only moderately old men? Middle-aged men? Young men? R. Kelly?
