Alaska governor balances newborn's needs, official duties
Abortion & Life

From the Associated Press:

The results of Gov. Sarah Palin's prenatal testing were in, and the doctor's tone was ominous: "You need to come to the office so we can talk about it."

Palin, known for a resolve that quickly launched her from suburban hockey mom to a player on the national political stage, said, "No, go ahead and tell me over the phone."

The physician replied, "Down syndrome," stunning the Republican governor, who had just completed what many political analysts called a startling first year in office.

My reaction to Palin sadly validates a fear that prehaps many or most professional women have: that men have trouble looking past their appearance to matters of greater importance.

She's beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. It jams my nervous system and prevents higher thought.

It must be so frustrating to be a woman who has to deal with men in a professional environment.

On the other hand, I've often thought it must be nice to walk into a room and instantly have everyone in it be favorably disposed to you and what you have to say ;)

Two thoughts. Laura Roslin. And McCain's VP.

The 44-year-old governor waited a few days before telling her husband, Todd, who was out of town, so she could understand what was ahead for them.
Once her husband got the news, he told her: "We shouldn't be asking, 'Why us?' We should be saying, 'Well, why not us?'"

yup, indeed, why not you, since the chances of having a child with Down's syndrome goes way up for grandmother-aged women?

surprise, surprise.
emperorbma   |2008-05-07 07:48:45
Considering that modern societies have women putting off having children until later and later, this is going to become more common, unfortunately...
MakaDad   |2008-05-08 12:46:04
And yet the instances of Downs children are decreasing because of the nearly-mandatory testing and the influence of doctors to end Downs-likely pregnancies.
patronpeter   |2008-05-08 16:36:28
so Downs is decreasing not because of advances in technology, but because baby-killing is becoming the norm? ugh.. i'm moving to france.

Historical abortion statistics, France
patronpeter   |2008-05-08 16:53:39
why was it so high in the 80's in 90's?
grizzly   |2008-05-08 17:27:30
Probably due to France legalizing abortion in 1975. It took a few years to become acceptable, and then the rate leveled off.
patronpeter   |2008-05-08 17:58:02
that's horrible, o.k. so the U.S is too liberal, France is too liberal.. forget it, i'm just going to build my own country.. uh, on a little island. "liberation within moderation" will be our credo. "shoes optional"

Some other countries / parts of the world are really much scarier. In 1995 in Eastern Europe, 65 out of 100 pregnancies ended in abortion.

I don't think people realize how many abortions happen. If you have a class of 20 students, add seven chairs in there because that is how many were aborted. In fact, an "Empty Chair Day" or "Empty Pew Day" may be an eye opener for many. Leave 1/4 of the chairs in your school or pews in your church empty to represent the 1/4 of the children that are aborted.
patronpeter   |2008-05-08 18:00:15
wow, i never knew it was that bad, i knew a girl i went to highschool with had six abortions before eleventh grade, i just don't understand it... it's really not hard to not get pregnant, you know? why be a murderer on top of being considered a floozy?
grizzly   |2008-05-08 18:29:28
The statistics for Russia are even scarier, with 75 out of a hundred pregnancies ended in abortion in the mid-1990's. Another way of looking at that number is that for every 100 live births, there were 225 abortions. In other words, for "Empty Chair Day", a class of 20 should have 45(!) chairs added to it.
patronpeter   |2008-05-08 18:35:48
don't they have sex education over there? God, that's alot of dead people, by the way, do they wait up to three months like us, or less?
emperorbma   |2008-05-08 20:12:30
Yup, no surprise that pro-lifers compare abortion to the Holocaust. I'm surprised so few secular humanist folks pick up on this travesty.
Entity   |2008-05-09 09:39:58
If it is 75 out of 100 ending in abortion, your math is off. For every 100 live births, there were 300 abortions. For a class of 20, 60 chairs would have be added.
grizzly   |2008-05-09 09:55:25
The actual number I saw was the 225 abortions per 100 live births. My math was off the other direction. It's "only" 67 out of 100 pregnancies aborted, not 75. My chair count is still correct.
patronpeter   |2008-05-09 17:36:05
that's still 75 chairs too many, what a shame...
emperorbma   |2008-05-08 20:05:44
What does this say about "Safe, Legal and Rare?" I think it says it's a bunch of hogwash... more like they just want "Safe and Legal."
