Eaton Rapids Holiness Camp Meeting a tradition for 127 years
Faith & Spirituality

From the Lansing State Journal:

The emphasis at the camp, he said, is on “the fruits of the spirit, that what God is doing is indeed creating in us love, patience, kindness, gentleness and so forth.” It is about a Christianity that is “internal and not merely external.” He insists that “there is still a crying need for Christians to discover the fullness of what the Holy Spirit can do in their lives.” and that camp meetings are still a valid way to lead believers to that discovery.

“Our biggest challenge at this present time is to find pastors who are convinced, as I am, of the importance of this kind of experience for their people,” he said.

I wonder what it is about the camp meeting that he feels is conducive to an experience of the HS?

The camp meeting sounds like a fine tradition. Sad that things like this are, according to the article, on the wane.

I wonder how much spiritual growth is happening, since they talk about reunions, tradition, and things being the same. I guess that can happen, but today it sounds like they are escaping reality, going into a bunker to escape the harsh world. Maybe I am being overly critical. Maybe God is working wonders in these situations, but I feel that God is calls us out into the world and not to hide away. Am I getting this article all wrong?

Well, so far as I know, nobody lives at the camp :)

Jesus shows us a pattern of going away to a deserted place, then coming back to the crowds, teaching his disciples, going back to the crowds ...

Very good point! I definitely was biased in reading the article and read too much into a couple of sentences.

I was more specifically wondering what it was about the camp meeting that the person quoted inb the article thought would lead to a "fuller" encounter with the HS:

Quote:
He insists that “there is still a crying need for Christians to discover the fullness of what the Holy Spirit can do in their lives.” and that camp meetings are still a valid way to lead believers to that discovery.
