The oldest known biblical manuscripts in existence, the Dead Sea Scrolls, are now online to everyone in the world with the aid of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and Google.

What I noticed was that Slashdot wanted to link this article along with this announcement. While I agree that hoarding of information is a means of control and the DSS probably could have been released sooner, the article itself has far too many factual errors and seems to come from a "Constantinian conspiracy" and "pro-gnostic" slant.

That said, this does seem to tie in rather handily with my discussion of "dialectic orthodoxy" in the previous articles...

Sometimes I wonder why I still read Slashdot. On Slashdot, I have become suspicious of the articles, summaries, and comments. It seems in that order ignorance increases. They don't always choose the best articles. It seems that the summaries many times get the facts wrong even though the article has them correct. And the comments show a definite bias and group-think to them. Anything that remotely has religious connection brings out the anti-science ignorant Christian character comments. I hate being wrongly characterized that way.

Enough ranting, I guess I still read Slashdot because most the articles are that bad (but enough to make me suspicious), and the comment system is quite good at filtering out the less important comments (not always in group-think situations).

It's certainly gone toward more silly sensationalism, there is no doubt. It's still pretty useful for Linux/BSD topics and bringing up the increasingly totalitarian nature of the US government towards Copyright protections and free speech, though.

Sometimes I have found an interesting perspective about religion but most of it is "onoes more skydaddy."

Hmmm... but where would they come by such characterizations?

I've fallen out of the habit of looking in, but that's what I like most about Slashdot.

Wow, metallurge drops in to post an article for the first time in ages and we turn it into something else altogether.

Mea culpa. Sorry about that derailment, but that Slashdot thing was kind of gnawing on me at the time.

It is pretty cool to see this online and to click on a verse and have an English translation of the verse. That is cool. The photocopying of it helps preserve it but outside of that I think it just is a way to publicize the scrolls and the collection.
