The Life You Save Could Be a Quarterback!

At beliefnet:
But since not every evangelical family can produce a star athlete like the ad shows, it would be an interesting twist for Focus on the Family to create some more "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life" ads that show more typical evangelical families who chose not to abort their kids. Here are some ideas to pitch to FOTF's agency. Picture the storyboards! A conservative Eddie Bauer-clad couple in their fifties speak solemnly about how glad they are they chose not to abort their now-grown son who dropped out of junior college but still lives at home and has a gaming addiction. It could show a little candid moment where he promises he'll go to church with them if they promise not to shut off the internet. How many evangelical families like that are out there? Way more than the Tebow family...

not to slight Tim Tebow or the Super Bowl ad, but this seemed an interesting thought experiment to imagine possible (more likely?) less than stellar outcomes for the evangelical unaborted.

the article wrote:
A similar couple could talk about how glad they are that they chose not to abort their daughter who grew up to get pregnant at age 18. It could show that she married the baby's 19 yr old father under pressure from the evangelical parents and then it could depict how quickly the marriage fell apart and how the parents are helping raise the grandbaby who lives with them. How many thousands of evangelical families have this story? Millions?

would Focus on the Family ever dare to pour all that energy and money into such an ad?

Wow, this story suggests that kids may grow up to be a disappointment to their parents. So is the article saying don't have kids because they may disappoint you? Don't take the risk!

Guess what, they will at times disappoint you. They will cause problems and hurt, but you will still love them. Why because they are sinful just like you.

About 10 years ago, I was having dinner with a family, I had recently met. They told the story of the birth of their oldest. There was problems with the pregnancy. Their doctor told them that they needed to change hospitals in order to "fix" the problem. It took them a little while to realize what the doctor was really suggesting. They stayed at the Catholic hospital and gave birth to their daughter. It was quite the story, especially when I was sitting across from their healthy teenage daughter.

that's not it at all. the author appears to be having a little fun with the implication by the ad that even difficult, dangerous pregnancies carry the possibility of producing a great quarterback, as if that's what justifies carrying to term. she's humorously asking if it wouldn't have been more realistic statistically to use a different spokesperson, and she offers some examples that might be more common than a media -class athlete.

c'mon, PH, where's that sense of humor ;-)

I guess I did not see the tongue in cheek humor. oops.
